Can you imagine the distance between Mumbai and Pune in just 14 to 25 minutes? Virgin Group chairman Richard Branson has pledged to do so by 2024 in India. On Sunday, the Virgin Group and the Maharashtra government made an agreement to link these two cities with Hyperloop.
The passenger compartment is run in Hyperloop technology through the magnetic powered vacuum tube. This technology is not being used anywhere in the world so far. Last year Hyperloop technology was tested. It is likely that India can become the first market for this technology for Virgin Hyperloops.
Branson said that if everything goes through a fixed plan, then this project of $ 1 Billion would greatly reduce the distance between Maharashtra’s two cities. Now it takes 3.5 to 4 Hours to reach the destination by car, while the distance from the plane is 30 to 35 Minutes.
Virgin Group founder Richard Branson announced this agreement in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Magnetic Maharashtra Investor Summit. Branson said that he wants to use India as an export hub for Hyperloop tubes.
Mumbai-Pune is one of the busiest routes in the world. Branson said that connecting these two cities with hyperloop would be of great benefit. That’s why the government is taking an interest in this project. He said, “In the next three years we will complete the testing work on this route. We hope that in the next six to seven years, we will open this route.” A majority of the investment in this project will come from private sector.
Branson said, “We are now looking for a local partner for this project. We are talking to people working in different areas over this.” The Virgin Hyperloop can catch speeds of up to 1,000 kilometers per hour. However, according to a recent study in India, its average speed will be 350 kilometers per hour. Virgin claims that in one hour it can travel 10,000 passengers on both sides of the route. According to the company, it will be able to commute around 15 Million people annually on this route. Branson has assured that he will keep the price low for Hyperloop. He said that we are not starting this service just for rich people. Our motive is to transit more and more people with Hyperloop. Branson said that this project will also create employment opportunities for the people.
