With all laurels, Miss South Africa Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been crowned the Miss Universe 2017. Demi-Leigh was crowned by Iris Mittenaere, Miss Universe 2016, during the 66th Miss Universe pageant. The first runner-up is Miss Colombia Laura González and the second runner-up Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett. The beauty pageant was held on November 26, 2017, in Las Vegas.

Miss South Africa: The Next Miss Universe 2017

Demi-Leigh is 22 years old and has completed her degree in business management from the North-West University.

In a pre-taped interview, Demi-Leigh had conversed about her experience being held at the gunpoint. This experience made her passionate about training the women in self-defense. She suggested that by using the Miss Universe platform, she will develop a program that will promote self-defense program for women.

In the Q&A session, Demi-Leigh was asked the question, What according to her was the most important problem the women population faced at workplace. To which she answered, “In some places, women get paid 75% of what men earn for doing the same job, working the same hours — and I do not believe that this is right”. She came up with the point that women should be paid equally on the basis of the work that they are doing.

In this segment, Miss Colombia and Miss Jamaica equally impressed the judges by their answers. They were asked about their opinion on how to talk with the children about the terrorism and the sexual harassment.

Representing India in the beauty pageant was Shraddha Shashidhar. Shraddha was the winner of the Yamaha Fascino Miss Diva 2017. But sadly, she couldn’t make it up in the top 16.

In the National Costume contest, Shraddha was adorning Radha representing the feminine nature of the God. She wore a gorgeous blue and pink lehenga, which was designed by Melvyn Dominic Noronha and Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla.

The top 16 contestants in the beauty pageant were: from the Africa and Asia Pacific region Miss Thailand, Miss Sri Lanka, Miss Ghana, and Miss South Africa. From the European region, the beauties were Miss Spain, Miss Ireland, Miss Croatia, and Miss Great Britain. From the American region, the contestants were Miss Colombia, Miss USA, Miss Brazil, and Miss Canada. The final four were the wild card entries Miss Philippines, Miss Venezuela, Miss Jamaica, and Miss China.
