The embers of hookah smoking had caused the Kamla Mills fire tragedy. Investigation carried out by the Mumbai municipal commissioner, Ajoy Mehta has revealed this. The embers of illegally prepared hookah at Mojo’s Bistro led to the fire that caused several deaths.
This unfortunate incident had led to the death of approximately fourteen people. Most of them were at the roof top of ‘1 Above’ pub, which is adjacent to Mojo’s Bistro. This accident took place on December 29 when flying charcoals from Mojo’s Bistro reached the mill. Ajoy Mehta, the municipal commissioner is taking actions to get the owners of both the restaurants arrested for illegal serving of hookah and negligence. The owners of the premises and also the interior and exterior decorators and architects of the buildings will be arrested for this event.
A day after the fire broke out at Kamala Mills, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis asked the Mumbai commissioner, Ajoy Mehta to investigate the case. Besides this investigation, Mumbai fire brigade also claimed that the charcoals of hookah led to the fire. Mojo’s Bistro has unlawfully covered a part of their terrace and also has made it with all kinds of combustible materials which encouraged easy spread of fire. ‘1 Above’ pub is also being accused as a partner in crime because they have a common wall with Mojo’s Bistro which is again illegal. While the later started the fire, ‘1 Above’ is responsible for illegal constructions.
The report also spoke against fire brigade, which might lead to the suspension of 10 officials for dereliction of responsibilities. The 98-page report will bring in some amendments in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act to make the laws against pubs and eateries more stringent. One such recommendation is engagement of a fire safety officer in every restaurant.
