Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram was questioned for 11 hours at a stretch on Thursday by the officials of the Enforcement Directorate or ED. He was suspected to have a connection with the INX media money scandal case.
Karti Chidambaram was called by the agency in order to confront the Investigating Officer or IO of the case. He arrived at the office at 11:30 am and left the office at 10:30 pm.
As per the official sources, Karti was asked numerous questions regarding his role in the said case. His statements were recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act or PMLA.
In the last two scenarios, where Karti was asked to be present in front of the committee, his authorized representative attended the case on behalf of him. However, this time he was asked to attend the call personally. The case of laundering was raised against him and other members by the central probe agency in May last year.
A case, equivalent to an FIR of the police in the name of Enforcement Case Information Report or ECIR has been lodged in the ED office. Apart from Karti Chidambaram, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea were also accused in the said case.
As per the sources, the officials are proceeding with the case in the usual manner. ED disclosed the fact of illegal payment commenced by the INX media, which led to the filing of an FIR by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The CBI even carried out the investigation by searching the house of Karti Chidambaram across the four cities, where he was alleged to take illegal payment from the said media firm owned by the Mukerjea couple in order to destroy the tax probe.
The houses of the people who were attached to the Aircel-Maxis deal along with Karti were also searched to obtain the necessary information.
