US-based e-bus manufacturer Proterra sets record, runs 1,771 km on single charge

Presently, in the mobility space, automakers have acquired dominance in the electric transmission. Now the focus is on to increase the range of the vehicles. With various players simultaneously revealing their electric vehicle with varying travel range, one of the manufacturers of catalyst battery-electric vehicles based in the United States, Proterra has set a marvelous record by developing heavy-duty battery-electric bus that can travel 1,771 km on a single charge. This achievement is acknowledged as the world’s record. The company has 35 Foot and 45 Foot Catalyst electric buses in its product portfolio.

The 18 Ton and 40 Feet long environment-friendly bus that is equipped with 4 battery packs under the floor and supplementary on the rooftop reported a record at Indiana’s Navistar Proving Grounds. The bus surpassed the previous electric bus distance record by a huge gap of 753 km and in case of other electric vehicle distance by approximately 145 km.

The Catalyst E2 max 40-foot bus made by Proterra covered the distance with energy storage capacity of 660 kWh. The company since last three years has witnessed victory over enhancement of product range and battery capabilities.

Looking onto its previous achievements, late back in 2015, the company managed to accomplish 415 km of distance with energy storage of 257kWh, and in 2016 it got success in reaching the mark of 970 km with 440 kWh on a single charge.

Chief Commercial Officer of Proterra, Matt Horton stated that our major accomplishment is beating the previous world record of 1,630 km that was set by light-duty passenger electric vehicle. This vehicle is 46x lighter than the catalyst E2 max. This success is an evidence to Proterra’s intentionally developed efficient drivetrain, energy-dense batteries, and electric bus design.

The company does business with various potential end-users such as commercial transit agencies, municipal corporations, and universities in the United States.

While sharing his views on record-breaking accomplishment, CEO of Proterra, Ryan Popple said, “We believe that this model of a heavy-duty electric bus is superior to all of the applications and transportation market will be the first potential segment to adopt the switch completely to battery electric powered vehicles.”

The early adopters of the electric bus have created a base for the future-based heavy-duty applications, such as commercial trucks and motor coaches.

Hence, looking at the pace of development and adoption of electric vehicle technology, it can be assured that in coming years, pollution numbers might witness a drastic drop.
